Why Do I See A Broken Face When I Look In the Mirror?

When we set up Spritual And Psychic Development, it was not only to outline the many different ways of harnessing your psychic abilities and developing emotionally and spiritually, it was also to discuss our own experiences in ways which may help others.

Over the years there have been many comments here. Usually people like to share their experiences, or ask others for help on their spiritual journey. But sometimes we are drawn to particular comments. And so I think it is time to discuss a few on these pages.

The responses I personally was particularly drawn to were on the post How To See Your Spirit Guide In The Mirror, so I’ll talk about these today.

Several commentators to that article were already happy in the knowledge that they had a spirit guide. They needed no reassurance from looking in a mirror. The feeling that their guide was with them was all they needed.  They had absolute trust.

There was also the question :

do you do it in the dark or when the lights are on?

Which could be taken many ways :) But as to seeing your spirit guide in the mirror, it makes no difference really - dark or light. Although you may be a little hampered if there is no light and you want to physically see (rather than psychically sense) your guide.

Some people have difficulty looking in a mirror in a dark room. It feels kind of ‘creepy’.  To those people I say, you can see your spirit guide in bright daylight, so you really do not need to turn off the lights if it makes you feel better to be in full light.

However, although being afraid of the dark is almost an instinct in many of us, once you know your spirit guide is with you, it really will not matter be in the dark. You will feel secure in the knowledge that you are beig taken care of.

However, the response to the article which really drew me in was made by ‘anonymous’, who said:

when I look into the mirror, I didnt see my own face. I see a horrible broken one. I’ve experienced this like twice. can someone tell me what’s going on? I’m freaking out.

I felt I had to answer this resonse in more depth.

But before I begin, I must remind you I am not a qualified psychologist, nor a physician of any kind.  My answer to the comment must therefore be taken as my personal feelings only (and, in this case, using a friend’s experience - she gives her consent).

My friend is spiritually aware. For some time, she has been happy in the knowledge that she has a spirit gude and he is caring for her.  However, fairly recently ‘life’ got in the way and she sidelined spiritual development for a while.  But one day she was casually looking in her mirror (not even looking for her spirit guide), when the face peering back at her appeared to be ‘broken’.  This happened on a number of ocassions.

And yes - she did ‘freak out’ a bit…

So we discussed her experience to try to get to the bottom of this. I asked her the following questions:

  • Is there any chance your mirror is warped in some way?

She answered ‘no’.  My friend is an attractive woman.  She usually enjoys the experience of looking in the mirror, particularly that particular mirror, as it ‘makes her figure look really good’ :)  So no - the mirror wasn’t warped.

  • Was she looking in the mirror at a particular time of day - when the sun was going down, for instance, or when a cloud passed overhead and overshadowed her view?

Sometimes, yes.  But she had realised this could be the reason for the ‘broken face’ she saw. So she had looked in the mirror in bright sunlight, as sunshine makes her feel happy. But she got the same ‘broken’ effect.

And that was the key….

My friend, like many of us, feels happier when the sun is shining. Going for a walk in the sunshine and feeling the warmth on her face usually makes her feel relaxed and at one with herself. But recently even this hadn’t been having its full effect.

She was feeling ‘low’.  Her self-esteem had hit rock bottom and nothing she was doing was making her feel well - in mind, body or soul.

These are difficult times for most of us. Many of us put spiritual and psychic development on the back boiler as we get on with trying to cope with the strains of ‘everyday life’. My friend had done just that. Problems in her life had taken over and she had lost her sense of self.

As we talked, my friend realised what had happened to her.  And once she recognised the problem, she knew how to deal with it.

Despite the calls on her time, she made the time to meditate and get back in touch with her spirit guide and with her sense of who she was; as a person in this physical realm and as a spiritual being.

She got back in touch with her soul.  And she realised that she needed to nurture the broken face she was seeing in the mirror, rather than reject it.

For my friend, nurturing the broken face was a spiritual task, helped by her spirit guide who helped her see the way forward.

And to her surprise, this was not just about developing spiritually, but about taking care of her physical being. After all, although (I believe) our soul can encompass many physical beings, there is no point in putting the body we have now ‘on hold’ and waiting for better luck next time around. :)

In order to nurture our physical being, we need to give it sustenance - physical, mental, and emotional, as well as spiritual.

This could be in very simple terms. Watching our diet, doing some excercise, taking breaks during our working day. Even a night out with friends can help to make us feel better on all levels.

As to problems we are facing in this physical realm - they won’t go away just because we neglect ourselves.

Whether you have a problem with money (who doesn’t right now?), or at work, or with a partner, you need to be physically, mentally and emotionally as strong as your physical being allows to cope with this.

That’s not saying that we have to be ‘the best of the best’ in order to get through difficult times.  We also need to know that noone is perfect and that some of us may face very difficult problems in this physical life.

But we are all here for a purpose, whatever that may be, and we owe it to ourselves to take care of ourselves as well and as best we can.

And to do that, we can go inside ourselves and listen to what our being is telling us.  In the quiet we will know.  We don’t need to force this, or call upon a spirit guide we may not have seen yet to help us with our task.

Our spirit guides are there, helping us, whether we are able to acknowledge them or not.

When we are ready, we will be able to sense them in some way. All we need to know is that they are there and Trust in this.

This way, we will learn to help that ‘broken face’ we may see in the mirror. It is only broken in the sense that we are struggling right now.

Once we get in touch with ourselves again, we will realise that this wasn’t scary, but a sign we need to take care of ourselves more.  That’s all :)

I hope my response here has helped some of the commentators who responded to the original post How To See Your Spirit Guide In The Mirror.

Coming to terms with who we are and how we can help ourselves is something we often reject.  But it is very important to all of us, spiritually, mentally, emotionally and (yes) physically.  This will helped our own spiritual healing and make us stronger at all levels.

Take Time To Find Yourself

Meditating On Who You Are As A Person

I found a very enlightening quote today, which, when pondered, could help you a great deal with your Spiritual and Psychic Development.

The quote concerns getting to know ourselves and being balnced and in harmony with who we are as human and spiritual beings.

It is from the philosopher Chuang-Tzu:

“…The effect of life in society is to complicate and confuse our existence, making us to forget who we really are by causing us to become obsessed with what we are not.” –Chuang-Tzu

I think this is so relevant to life today. We are all so busy going about our daily working lives and trying to ‘fit in’ with our environment. We wear ‘the right clothes’, we say ‘the right things’ and we know that some of this we have to do to keep our jobs.

Others among us are business people. We develop our ‘business brand’ to reflect, not ourselves, but what we wish to promote.

And in doing all this, it is hard to remember exactly who we really are. What life for us is really all about.

So why not do the job, promote your business, or whatever else you have to do in your professional life, but when you get a quiet moment, just meditate on who you really are.

Get to know yourself again.

Yes, you may be acting in a way that is not really you. You may feel you have to ‘put on a front’. And if this is okay with you, then at least you will understand why you are doing this, without casting any ‘identity worries’ aside.

This will not only help you along your Spritual Path, it will also make you more at ease with who you are and why you are the way you are.

Learning To Love Yourself

Can You Love Others If You Do Not Love Yourself?

I found a quote the other day about being at peace with yourself. This is it:

The joy of love is possible only if you have known the joy of being alone, because then only do you have something to share. Otherwise, two beggars meeting each other, clinging to each other, cannot be blissful. They will create misery for each other because each will be hoping, and hoping in vain, that “The other is going to fulfil me.” The other is hoping the same. They cannot fulfil each other. They are both blind; they cannot help each other…

In other words, we cannot rely on others to give us unselfish love, if they are still searching for that love themselves.

Neither can we give unselfish love to another human being, if we are still looking to them to reflect love back to us. They will be incapable fo doing so, and so will we.

This happens in relationships a lot. We look for someone we hope we can live our loves with. And that is ok.

But if we are expecting that relationship to give us all the love we need, we are mistaken. And our partner. If he or she is also looking to us to fulfill their needs for love, then they will find us wanting.

And so the relationship will fail. It may struggle on as we search for some way to find that love. But if we cannot love ourselves, we will be looking in the wrong place.

We cannot cure our loneliness by relying on the love of others
. We have to be at peace and harmony with ourselves first.

Meditation Exercise With Chakra Visualisation

Exercise to help your meditation and connection with spirit

This is a simple exercise. It does, however have vivid imagery whic will not be to everyone’s taste, but it is not harmful. This meditation exercise is mind and imagination only and will not hurt you and it can help your spiritual and psychic development. However, to make this exercise most effective, practice is needed.

Crown Chakra Exercise
When in meditation and after opening all chakras, focus on your crown chakra. At the crown chakra see a crown and see the head of the crown open.

See the crown with a golden, hollow cylinder around the head. On the crown and inside the cylinder is a golden ball of light.

Get this ball spinning around the head. Follow it within your mind. Go left, go right. Just let it do this for a little while for about five minutes a day.

As you progress, then stop the ball of light and center it at the front of your forehead, then get it to go from front to back on left, then right just. Just five minutes for each session.

Keep doing this, and when you have developed the technique, start to use this within your opening up to communication.

I must repeat though. This is a visualisation exercise for the mind and will not hurt.

It really does help train the brain to get the blood flowing and heightens the experience. As we develop different models of meditation and opening to spirit, changing the exercises we do now and again keeps us fresh along our spiritual path.
